Stick With This App: “Caillou Stickers!”
If you’ve visited this site before, you know I love media that invites kids to become storytellers. Whether it’s a wordless picture book or app based on popular classic games like Fuzzy Felt or Colorforms, this type of media can stimulate the imagination as it encourages children to “talk through” a narrative.
A new app, Caillou Stickers! from Night & Day Studios is one of the better sticker apps I’ve found. First off, it features the adorable Caillou, star of the long-running PBS/Sprout series of the same name. He’s a sweet-tempered, imaginative little boy and big brother to Rosie. If your kids are a fan of the show, this app is a natural. Users get a choice of seven backgrounds—including birthday party, playground, and farm—and a choice of characters and props to build a story. Tap and drag characters and props to add them to the background.
The thing I love about this app is that users can use the pinch-zoom function to scale characters and objects bigger or smaller. I think this opens up the story possibilities considerably. In the tv show, Caillou often imagines he’s tiny or very big and this app allows users to imitate those stories. So is the yellow school bus a toy bus or a real bus? Your child can decide. Users can then snap a picture and email their photo (to grandma, I suspect) right from the app. On television, Caillou’s a sweetie pie and this app is pretty sweet, too.
