It may not sound like they’re gushing, but it takes a lot for a book to gain the distinction of being “Approved” by Parents’ Choice. In honor of the Olympics, the following is a round-up of the media that were honored with the Spring 2012 “Fun Stuff” award, because we’ve all been working very hard and have earned a bit of fun. For ages 10 and up.
This kit (seen above) contains the makings for several fun and crafty jewelry pieces made from bottle caps. The caps are most definitely included, along with a fun range of jewels, sequins, clasps, cords, and wires to finish your projects. Users can make a locket, beaded bracelet, earrings, and more. Very unique; more arty and interesting than cutesy.
Splat Art
For ages: 8 and up.
Andrew Pinder has created this big kids’ coloring book that invites users to draw scenes based on prompts, shapes, or splatters. Vintage photos are there to be scribbled upon. This book is a great kick-starter for imaginative play.
Star Wars Folded Flyers
For ages 8 and up.
This is a paper airplane kit sent from heaven for your Star Wars fan. Users learn about the vehicles depicted in all six films in the Star Wars Franchise and then are invited to fold and create their own flying starships. There are multiples of each design and each starship can really fly.

Capture the Flag by Kate Messner
For ages 8 and up.
Only a children’s book would choose a snowed-in airport for a setting, because only children realize what fun an airport can be. Trapped in the Washington, D.C. airport overnight, three children must find the thief who has stolen the flag that inspired “The Star Spangled Banner” before the snowstorm lets up and the thief (with the flag) escapes into the sky.
