I’ve become intrigued by an app that hasn’t even been invented yet. It proposes to offer a way into Shakespeare for the youngest users through music. It’s called Kinderbard and it’s the project-in-development of self-described “Shakespeare geek” Daeshin Kim.
As a bit of a Shakespeare geek myself, I wanted to know more about Kinderbard and Daeshin was kind enough to answer a few questions. The inspiration for Kinderbard came from Daeshin’s own four-year-old daughter. He and his wife moved to Paris and placed their daughter in a bilingual school. Their daughter struggled with the French language at first; but it was through simple French songs that she was able to mimic and eventually connect with the French language.
As lovers of Shakespeare, Daeshin and his wife searched for songs based on Shakespeare for their daughter but they simply didn’t exist. And so Kinderbard was born. The songs are sung by specific Shakespearean characters, like Juliet; the songs themselves are inspired by quotations. Each contemporary song illustrates a memorable moment from a play. In this video, you’ll hear Daeshin’s daughter, Sherman, singing “It’s Just a Name,” as Juliet from Romeo and Juliet:
This is a gutsy project that has the potential to open up a rich and glorious world to our kids. Daeshin has put together a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to develop Kinderbard and it has just been selected to appear on Kickstarter’s curated page. Check out Daeshin’s page.
